Milestones in Our History
Elder James Blakeney founded and organized the Holiness church in Whitehouse, Texas. His first message was preached from a wagon belonging to Mr. Calhoun Butler, with wooden slabs and sawdust gathered to create seating and flooring for worship. Even in that humble setting, the Spirit of the Lord moved powerfully.
The men of the church purchased land from Brother Pink and Sister Joanna Robinson for twenty dollars — a meaningful step toward establishing a permanent home. As the congregation grew beyond its original one-room structure, a new building was constructed and a new name was adopted: Whitehouse Church of God in Christ.
Over the decades, the church was blessed with faithful leaders who guided the congregation through many seasons — Elder S.D. Lee, Elder W.W. Flowers, Elder E.L. Jackson, Elder W.B. Houston, Elder Lilly, Elder Thomas Warren, and Elder Matthew Rider. Elder Rider served for 36 years and oversaw the construction of a new church building with improved facilities.
On February 8, 1990, the Lord sent Superintendent Noel Caldwell to serve as pastor. He led with wisdom, knowledge, and a strong foundation in the Word of God, shepherding the church through growth and through one of its greatest trials.
On Good Friday, April 6, 1996, the church building was burned beyond repair. Though the loss was heartbreaking, it did not destroy the faith of the people. Members worshiped together with local churches and gathered at the Smith Temple Annex building while preparing to rebuild — a season that stands as a powerful testimony to the unity and resilience of this congregation.
A new sanctuary rose from the ashes as a testimony to the church's unwavering faith and commitment. On November 16, 1997, the dedication service was held with Bishop David R. Houston, marking the beginning of a bold new chapter in the life of the church.
Whitehouse COGIC celebrated its 100th Church Anniversary with great joy and gratitude. The yearlong celebration included commemorative items, a special church history book, participation in the Whitehouse Yesteryear Parade, an anniversary banquet at the D.C. Brown Heritage building, and a final celebration on the second Sunday of October — a joyful and historic milestone for the entire church family.
On May 31, 2021, Pastor Noel Caldwell retired after 31 years of faithful leadership. His retirement was celebrated at St. Louis Baptist Church with family, friends, and community supporters. The Smith County Commissioners Court proclaimed March 19 as Superintendent Noel Caldwell Day in Smith County. His legacy continues to live on in the life of this church.
Following Pastor Caldwell's retirement, Elder Waymon Stewart was appointed Minister in Charge. Having served for over a decade as Assistant Pastor, he brought deep knowledge of the church's values, traditions, and people. On October 1, 2022, Elder Waymon Stewart was officially installed as pastor by Bishop David R. Houston. Today, Whitehouse Church of God in Christ continues to move forward in faith — standing as a testimony to God's goodness and remaining a pillar in the community.
